When should you see a specialist?

Your primary care provider is your first point of contact for most health concerns. But sometimes, a specialist's focused expertise can provide the answers or treatment you need. Here's how to know when a referral might be the right step.

Common reasons for a referral

  • A condition that needs focused expertise — such as a heart condition, joint problem, or skin concern that requires specialized testing or treatment.
  • A second opinion — when you want another perspective on a diagnosis or treatment plan.
  • Ongoing management — for chronic conditions that benefit from a specialist's ongoing involvement alongside your primary care provider.
  • Procedures or advanced testing — some diagnostic tests or treatments can only be performed by a specialist.

How referrals work at JAADE Health

Your primary care provider will discuss why a referral may be helpful and recommend a specialist within the JAADE Health network when possible. Our care team handles the coordination — sharing your records and scheduling so you don't have to start from scratch.

What to expect at a specialist visit

A specialist will review your medical history, conduct any necessary exams or tests, and develop a treatment plan. They'll communicate their findings back to your primary care provider so your entire care team stays informed.
